Analogue drums and triggers

For a long time it has been our intention to blend analogue drums with digital drums to get that human feel to the electronic sound. Finally, last monday we were set to go! By having added a drummer to the ‘The Livelong June’ live set-up we now have a superb drummer handy.

This studio session though, was purely a technical trial and error session, it turned out. But definitely worthwhile!

So what we did was to have the snared tuned for a shot gun sound. The kick was already prepared to have a nice fat sound. The intention was to get that perfect sound already on the analogue drum set, but we didn’t manage to get the depth and mid/bass frequencies from the snare. So we decided to go for the character of the sound that we where after and to mix the final stuff in Cubase. Then we started test recording. To be honest it sounded crap in the recording room (according to the drummer). But, when we got the mix right it sounded amazing! Finally, the analogue feel was there!

Next step was to get the midi triggers in place and working. After some misfortune with broken cables we caught the midi signal and found a nice electronic sound for it. The initial mix of electronic and analogue sounded almost perfect!

By that time it was already getting late so we decided to postphone the actual recording session until next time. Really looking forward to that since this feels like the last part in ‘the quest for the livelong sound’..

When the recording is in place, next thing will be to mix it with the programmed drum patches that our top notch drum programmer has created.

What a milestone!

Race against time – late night additions

Sitting up late and taking the song even one step further. Added some chords to the chorus to help it take off. Also (of course) added some quirky synth sounds. Put on some extra leads and some oriental sounding keys halfway through the song.
Yeez, really like where this is going! Some more variation on the drums and who knows where we’ll end up with this one.
Now, bouncing tracks to send to Benny for mixing.

Race against time (The song evolves)

The new song is taking shape. Each time new things are added to the song and each time something is dropped out. Thats the fun thing about making music. One day a song can sound completely marvelous and the next it just don’t sound right at all. Now i think it sounds like were getting there. This is the result of a couple of hours me and Marcus spent in the studio yesterday. The structure was already there so Marcus added some cool new synth sounds. its still a few more sounds we need to work on in the intro of the song. The song you hear is a song in the making. Feel free to drop a comment.

Race against time

Here is a song I created with my new Micro Synth pedal. It’s based around the lyrics I posted earlier. The song is about the frustration of time and social demands.

Race against time

Here is one of the new songs i’m working on at the moment. The lyrics are quite self explanatory. I wrote it at work when i felt that time was slipping away from me. Im trying out some real heavy distortion on this one. I hope it fits the rest of the songs. Im using the Micro synth by electro harmonix for the sound. For the song writing i mainly use my fender steel string guitar. Im gone post a sound clip pretty soon. / B
